Infinitely More: Answered Prayers on the Nune Field
Joy* is a special education teacher on the Nune field serving children/adults with special needs, as well as their families.
In January I was thinking, praying and dreaming about what might happen in 2024.
This year we might import some used wheelchairs, but I need a place to store them while we distribute them. The adults in our club for people with disabilities are asking for life-skills training so that they can be more independent…where could we give those lessons? Later this year we want to start an inclusive play group for little kids…where could that happen? All of our books, toys and materials for our work are stacked in my guestroom – it sure would be nice to have an office with storage space, instead.
As I prayed about all of these and more, God gave me a strong impression that I should look for an office in March.
Once March came and I was able to carve out some time, my local ministry partner and I contacted realtors and started looking. Each place we looked at we unenthusiastically said, “Hmmm, yes perhaps it could work. I guess we could rent this space if we organized well and did a lot of remodeling…”
Then we were shown a property with a large house on it. As soon as we walked in, we were excited! It had a small garden, enough rooms for storage and teaching spaces, as well as an outdoor balcony overlooking the river. It was a little rundown and needed quite a bit of work, but it was so worth fixing because of all the possibilities for use.
After spending a month installing wheelchair ramps, a kitchen and a wheelchair accessible shower, and painting and fixing a rotten floor and roof, we had our opening day.
We invited our adult group and their families. Fifty people came to enjoy each other’s company playing games, doing a craft and eating good food.
Now we are seeing other purposes for the place that we hadn’t imagined. A local fellowship is renting our biggest room to meet in on Sunday morning. A team member needed a place to store her things for a couple months. A local English training center is volunteering free English lessons to our special friends. Since their center is on the third floor, they will come to our office to give the lessons.
All this is happening just two months after opening. What else will God use this space for? He is changing my ideas and my dream for this space and surprising me at the same time!
I’m reminded of Ephesians 3:20 “Now all glory to God who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”
